Stay Until the Promise Comes

The risen Jesus had given His disciples a message for all nations, then told them to wait. Some work cannot begin until God gives power from on high.

And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. -- Luke 24:49 (KJV)

The disciples had every reason to run out of the room. Jesus stood alive in front of them. He showed them His hands and His feet. He ate fish where grief had been sitting. Then He opened their understanding so they could see the cross and resurrection written into the scriptures.

They had a message now. Repentance and remission of sins would be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. The next word should have sounded like go.

Jesus said wait.

The Pause He Commanded

Waiting can feel like wasted obedience when the need is obvious. The disciples could name the story. They had seen the wounds. They had heard the teaching. Still, Jesus did not trust the mission to memory, emotion, or momentum. He told them to stay in Jerusalem until the Father clothed them with power.

That pause protects us from confusing urgency with anointing. A person can work hard, speak often, plan well, and still move from an empty place. Jesus knew the nations would not be reached by men who had stirred themselves up for a few brave weeks. They needed the promise of the Father.

Power From on High

Some assignments expose the limits of your own strength. You can love the truth and still lack power to carry it well. You can see the need and still need God to steady your heart before you step into it.

Ask where Jesus may be saying wait when you wanted Him to say move. This kind of waiting is not drift. It prays. It listens. It stays where He said to stay until His strength replaces your strain.

Do not despise the upper room season. The promise of the Father can do more with a waiting witness than self-made effort can do with a running start.
